| Subscriber feedback: I do want to point out something I noticed in the second report on the South Dakota accident (1/28/06). The article reads, “Loebs said two workers stood underneath the slab as it was being lifted, but got out of the way when the crane gave out.” Are they NUTS!? I guess this is why OSHA states, “No person should be permitted to stand or pass under a load on the hook.” I would recommend you make a comment about this under the article posting. Love the site. I review it daily and pass on pertinent Operating Experiences to the field crews for use in prejob briefs and in training. 1/30/06: Construction Worker Says He Felt Concrete Falling | Cache Copy | 1/31/06: Crane owner says clutch or brake may be cause of accident | Cache Copy | 2/01/06: OSHA inquires on crane crash 6/08/06: No fault in crane crash | Cache Copy | |

| Cache Copy | This is the 3rd AVOIDABLE incident reported to this site this year in which power lines were involved. There were 38 incidents reported to this site in 2005, 41 in 2004, 60 in 2003, 33 in 2002 and 35 in 2001. Again, all were avoidable. Just don't work cranes near energized power lines. Power line contact is the most frequent cause of crane accidents, yet they are the easiest to prevent. LOOK up and live! |
