A 31-year-old man working on the San Diego Trolley extension was killed yesterday when a crane accident led to the collapse of an 80-foot column being built to support a bridge, authorities said.

The 12:12 p.m. accident west of Waring Road apparently happened when part of the crane struck a cable that was holding up the steel frame for the bridge support, police said. The impact snapped the cable, causing the steel frame to collapse.

This is the 10th Finger Pointer AVOIDABLE incident reported to this site this year in which power lines were involved. There were 35 reported to this site in 2001. Again, all were avoidable. Just don't work cranes near energized power lines.

Copyrighted photo is not posted, however, it is similar this one. WOW!

A 40-year-old man was lucky to escape injury yesterday when the 175-tonne crane he was operating tipped backwards, leaving him stuck several metres off the ground in the cab.

The man had been using the crane to lift a 27.3-tonne concrete slab on a building site in the Malaga industrial area about 1pm.

It is understood the load, which was being carried behind the crane, was about 1.5m off the ground when the crane tipped up on its rear.

Fellow workers used a ladder to get the man out of the cab, which was 4m in the air.

He was taken by ambulance to Royal Perth Hospital unhurt but with severe shock. None of his workmates was injured when the crane toppled but many were shaken by the incident. Ballajura Const. Travis Walsh said the workers believed the man had either over-extended the crane or the wind had blown it over.

The company which owned the equipment, Tom's Cranes, brought in several other big cranes to right it.
