Finger Pointer This is the 9th (AVOIDABLE!) incident reported to this site this year in which power lines were involved. There were 35 reported to this site in 2001. Again, all were avoidable. Just don't work cranes near energized power lines.

A grieving wife today spoke of her torment at losing her childhood sweetheart in a freak workplace accident.

Roger Ireland, 52, of Oval Road, Costessey, died after a large steel plate being carried by a crane swung around and hit him on the back of the head at scrap metal merchants Easco, in Lenwade.

Reportedly, he was operating the controls at the rear of the truck (crane rear mounted). Boom came in and crushed him between the controls/truck body and boom.

The 70-foot crane was moving a concrete barrier when it suddenly toppled over onto the interstate, covering all three lanes and crushing two cars.

A similar accident happened in Burlington, North Carolina on I-85 in February. The driver of the vehicle was killed.
