July 22, 1999: Crane Accident
This machine was extracting pipe pile, working from a barge. The job involved replacing the Pier structures with new floating units. With the extractor and pile on the hook, the machine had seven degrees (7deg) of working radius. The barge was not ballasted, nor was the crane secured to the barge. The accident resulted when the barge listed and the machine was at the boom down limit, no one was hurt. Perhaps a larger machine would have given that extra margin of error. This is a new 118H Link-Belt. The machine was totally trashed when they removed it from the barge.

PARSIPPANY: Eastbound Route 80 was shut for four hours yesterday morning, after a crane struck high tension wires, State Police said. Traffic had to be diverted off the interstate approaching milepost 46.5 following the 3:10 a.m. accident, Sgt. Al Della Fave said. Crane operator Robert Vonsee, 34, of North Caldwell, was moving a concrete barrier when the boom struck high tension wires crossing the eastbound lanes of Route 80, Della Fave said.
